Let's Get Started

One of the key factors determining success in changing behavior is communication. Communication goes two ways.  The first step is to gain a better understanding of how our dogs are communicating with us and how we are communicating with them.

Next, we want to use this new knowledge to interact with them! This means listening to them with our eyes and ears and respecting their communication.

If you have been punishing any communication from your dog, like growling, lunging or snarling, stop the punishment immediately. Respected associations like the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommend avoiding aversives. Aversives shut down communication. We want a dog that feels free to communicate with us. You'll understand why this is so important we move through our program. For now, let's learn the basics.

Your first challenge is to learn all about dog body language.
